Description:
Black and Brown children our society faced with racism daily, resulting in some cases, fear, anxiety and even Race-Based Trauma. As an advocate for children, therapists utilizing play therapy need to be well informed about racism, micro and macro aggression, social injustice and the impact these have on the lives of the children served. Directive and non-directive play therapy strategies to heal wounds of trauma and foster empowerment will be shared. Additionally, participants will be exposed to the use of art, music and bibliotherapy that are relevant to the African American culture.
Training Objectives: 

1. Define cultural competence, cultural humility, racism and Race-Based Trauma and its impact on Black and Brown children.
2. Describe ways in which children express awareness of cultural differences in the play therapy room. 
3. Identify examples of transference and countertransference related to cultural issues in play therapy practice. 
4. Demonstrate directive and non-directive play therapy strategies to empower young Black and Brown minds.
5. Identify 10 qualities needed to enable therapists to be culturally competent and advocate for social justice on behalf of Black and Brown children including those in play therapy.

Founder and Director of Barstow Acres Children’s Center, a non-profit organization that provides children’s mental health services. Trained in Gestalt play therapy with Violet Oaklander (retired). Authored chapter, Play Therapy in the African American Village in the text, Cultural Issues in Play Therapy by Eliana Gil, Ph.D., RPT-S, and Athena Drewes, PsyD, RPT-S.

Cancellation Policy:

Written notification of cancellation must be received in our office at least 10 business days prior to a training for a refund. A $25.00 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund. There will be no refund for cancellation notification less than 10 business days.

CBPS reserves the right to cancel a training due to inclement weather or insufficient enrollment. In the event of such cancellation, you will receive a full refund.
