This is an intermediate level seminar which means that individuals who attend should have a strong background in the topic being presented or should have previously attended any pre-requisite seminars and have received a strong foundation of understanding in the field of play therapy, therapy with children, etc.

Description:

This 3 hour webinar workshop will provide an overview of Dr. Bruce Perry's Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, a neurodevelopmental approach to treatment of traumatized children. Art and play therapy directives will be integrated into this model to aid in assessing and informing specific developmentally-sensitive interventions from the "bottom-up" of brain functioning that "...match the needs and strengths..." of each child. Participants will learn several specific expressive art and play directives to mediate missed opportunities in each stage of brain development for reparative healing. These art and play activities, with a focus on rhythmic movement, mirroring, bilateral scribbling and "The Squiggle Story", will be demonstrated in both didactic and experiential format. Participants will be able to create these art directives at home during the live webinar. Consideration of using these directives via telehealth video platforms will be discussed. Presenter will have a volunteer with her for live demonstration of mirroring activities. This workshop provides an outstanding foundation for the clinical Application of art interventions in play therapy.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to.
  • Define Perry's Neurosequential Model of Therapeutic as integrated into art-based play therapy
  • Demonstrate skills needed with specific neurosequential art; interventions for the traumatized child in play therapy
  • Identify 2 art and play interventions for each of the 3 neurodevelopmental levels of brain function: Brainstem, Limbic and Cortex.
PART II: A Neurosequential Art Approach in Play Therapy Using Tele-Expressive Art Techniques up the Developmental Ladder
Description:

In this second part of Neurosequential Art Approach in Play Therapy, we will dive deeper into Lowenfeld and Brittain’s Developmental Stages of Art. Learn about the Expressive Therapies Continuum and how both of these overlap with Perry’s Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT). We will then spend 90-minutes doing art experientials used in play therapy following the bottom-up brain from Brainstem to Limbic to Cortex, matching appropriate creative interventions for each level. Enhancing these art experientials will be the opportunity to learn virtual creative techniques using Zoom’s White Board and Screen Share such as Graffiti Wall, group collage, and more!

Objectives:
  • Identify and use at least 6 art and play interventions from a bottom-up perspective
  • Describe The Expressive Therapies Continuum and its overlap with the Neurosequential Model
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of Lowenfeld and Brittain’s Stages of Art Development and its relevancy to neurodevelopment in play therapy
