Description:

The Polyvagal Theory, originally introduced by Stephen Porges, MD., has revolutionized the field of psychotherapy, particularly working with clients who have experienced trauma.

the Polyvagal Theory has changed how we assess and create our treatment plan. Additionally, it has changed how we understand the importance of the therapist's way of being in the therapy space versus doing activities with the client. Further, the theory provides the science behind the importance of the connection between the therapists and the child. Understanding the different systems and how each child switches through these systems helps guide therapists in their response and play with children. This training will introduce the Polyvagal Theory and how to integrate this knowledge into play therapy. Using the model to offer support to parents will be included.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the function of the three branches f the autonomic nervous system based on the polyvagal theory, ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal systems.

  • Articulate the concept of perception of safety and how they can (and must) take steps to create a felt-0safe environment in the play therapy room.

  • Describe how parents can use this knowledge to help children at home to create a safe environment while still being able to accomplish certain tasks
