M.Ed, MA, NCC

When: July 14, 2022 6-8:30 pm

CE Hours: 2

Description:
Mindfulness for children has become increasingly popular in schools and mental health settings. Teaching children how to be aware of what is being sensed in the moment without interpretation or judgment is key to self-regulation. Research shows that mindfulness can help children increase focus, become aware of inner thoughts and feelings, make better choices, and overall improve emotional regulation. One of the goals of play therapy is for children through play, with the therapist reflecting content and feelings, to gain insight and deeper meaning which leads to self-regulation.

This workshop will begin with an explanation of what mindfulness is, followed by group exercises to increase awareness and inner peace. Further, participants will learn techniques to teach breathing and guided imagery. Methods to relax the body and reduce stress will be included that may be used to begin and end directive play therapy sessions.

Learning Objectives:
  • Define mindfulness
  • Demonstrate and practice methods for self-awareness, breathing, and use of self-guided imagery that may be used during directive play therapy
  • State how mindfulness is beneficial for developing self-control, decrease stress and anxiety for children in play therapy
