Description:
Trauma and the effects on the brain can be complex, particularly when dealing with children and adolescents in play therapy. Various approaches to treatment exist depending on the type of trauma and the age of the child. This workshop will explore the difference between grief and trauma and the emotional aftermath that may ensue. Play therapy treatment to include restoration of self and reconnecting to the community will be discussed. Directive play therapy techniques to include sensory-based interventions will be demonstrated and practiced.

Social workers (LCSW, LMSW, LISW, BSW, AAW), psychologists (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) school counselors, school psychologist, professional counselors (LMHC, LCMHC, CMHC, LPC, LCPC), marriage and family therapists (LMFT, LIMFT) art therapists, play therapists, occupational therapists, graduate students, and others in the mental health-related field.

Learning Objectives:
After attending this workshop, participants will be able to…
- Explain the true definition of trauma
- List the DSM-5 criteria for trauma
- Describe trauma as an experience versus a diagnostic category
- Analyze the three steps in treating trauma in play therapy such as safety, telling the trauma story, and posttraumatic growth and implications for interventions
- Demonstrate at least six Directive play therapy interventions for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma
- Recall strategies for working with families of traumatized children and adolescents in play therapy

Presenter: Nikole Jiggetts, LCSW, RPT-S, CTS
Nikole Jiggetts, LCSW is a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor and Certified Trauma Specialist. As the owner of Replay Counseling Center, LLC, she is passionate about her work with children, adolescents and their families for over the past 20 years. Her focus is providing individuals with the opportunity to work through their difficulties and begin to start feeling better about their lives utilizing expressive therapies. In addition to serving as an adjunct professor for the VCU School of Social Work, Nikole is also a life coach and parenting consultant as well as a training facilitator for mental health clinicians in the states of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Cancellation Policy:
Written notification of cancellation must be received in our office at least 10 business days prior to a training for a refund. A $25.00 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund. There will be no refund for cancellation notification less than 10 business days.
CBPS reserves the right to cancel a training due to inclement weather or insufficient enrollment. In the event of such cancellation, you will receive a full refund.
